Vivekananda Rock Ferry — Timings, Tickets & Insider Tips (2026)
The ferry to Vivekananda Rock Memorial is one of the most rewarding short journeys in India. But it can also become one of the most frustrating — long queues, sea spray, and confusing ticket counters. This 2026 guide tells you exactly how to do it right.
Ferry Timings
Ferries usually operate from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with last entry around 3:30 PM. The service may be paused during rough sea conditions, especially during the monsoon (June–September) and on full moon days when tides are higher. Always check on the morning of your visit — the ticket counter near the jetty has the latest information.
Where to Buy Tickets
Tickets are sold only at the official Poompuhar Shipping Corporation counter near the ferry jetty in Kanyakumari. There are no advance online bookings — turn up early. A combined ticket usually covers both the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue, which are on adjacent rocks. The combined ticket is much better value than visiting them separately.
Best Time to Go
The first ferry of the day is the smartest choice. Crowds build rapidly after 9:30 AM, and by mid-morning waits can stretch to 90 minutes or more — especially on Sundays, public holidays and during the December–January peak season. If you're staying at Hotel Sebaa Palace, walk to the jetty for the 8 AM ferry and you'll be back for breakfast.
What to Expect at the Memorial
Once on the rock, allow at least 60–90 minutes. The main mandapam houses a striking statue of Swami Vivekananda. The adjacent dhyana mandapam (meditation hall) is dimly lit, cool and quiet — visitors are encouraged to sit in silence. Photography is restricted in the meditation hall.
The Thiruvalluvar Statue
Just 100 metres away across the water stands the 133-foot statue of Thiruvalluvar, the Tamil poet-saint. The viewing platform at its base offers spectacular 360-degree views of Kanyakumari coast, the meeting of three oceans, and the Vivekananda Rock itself.
Practical Tips
- Wear non-slip footwear — the rock surfaces can be wet from sea spray. - Carry a light scarf or shawl. The breeze is strong even in summer. - Modest dress is appreciated. Both sites are spiritual destinations. - Drinking water is sold on the rocks, but at high prices — carry a bottle. - Mobile signal is patchy. Tell people you'll be offline for a couple of hours.
Stay Within Walking Distance
The single biggest time-saver is skipping the 7 AM auto from a faraway hotel. Hotel Sebaa Palace is within easy walking distance of the ferry jetty — guests reach the queue in minutes, not in traffic.
