How to Reach Kanyakumari — From Chennai, Bangalore, Trivandrum & Beyond
Kanyakumari sits at the southernmost tip of mainland India. It is well-connected by rail and road, and reachable by air via Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram). Here is the practical guide for travellers from India's main metros.
By Air — Nearest Airports
- **Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) — 90 km / ~2 hrs:** The closest airport. Direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Gulf cities. From the airport, prepaid taxis and Uber/Ola operate to Kanyakumari. - **Madurai (MDU) — 240 km / ~5 hrs:** Useful if combining Kanyakumari with Madurai's temples. - **Kochi (COK) — 310 km / ~6 hrs:** Convenient if you're already exploring Kerala.
By Train — Direct Routes
Kanyakumari Railway Station (CAPE) is at the southern end of the Indian Railways network and very well-connected.
- **From Chennai:** Chennai Egmore – Kanyakumari Express (16 hrs). Overnight option, comfortable. - **From Bangalore (Bengaluru):** Direct trains run multiple times a week. Allow ~16–18 hrs. - **From Mumbai:** Jayanti Janta Express and Himsagar Express run weekly — long but scenic (~42–48 hrs). Most travellers fly to Trivandrum instead. - **From Trivandrum:** Multiple daily trains, journey ~2.5 hrs. The cheapest and most reliable option from Kerala. - **From Delhi:** Himsagar Express — the longest scheduled train in India — connects Jammu Tawi to Kanyakumari (~70 hrs). Most travellers fly.
By Bus
State-run TNSTC and KSRTC, plus private operators, run frequent buses to Kanyakumari from: - Trivandrum (~2.5 hrs) - Madurai (~6 hrs) - Chennai (~14 hrs, overnight Volvo recommended) - Bangalore (~16 hrs, overnight Volvo recommended)
By Road / Self-Drive
The drive from Trivandrum is one of the most pleasant short coastal drives in South India. Roads are good. Allow 2 hours including a coffee stop.
From Bangalore, the typical route is via Salem – Madurai – Tirunelveli – Kanyakumari (~16 hrs). Plan it as a 2-day drive with a halt in Madurai.
Getting Around in Kanyakumari
The town itself is small. Most attractions — the beach, Sunrise Point, ferry jetty, Kumari Amman Temple — are within a 1 km radius and best explored on foot. For sites further out (Vattakottai, Suchindram, Mathoor), hire a car or auto for the day.
Stay Tip
If you're arriving late at night by train or bus, choose accommodation in central Kanyakumari rather than on the highway outskirts. Hotel Sebaa Palace has 24×7 reception and is within easy walking distance of the railway station and bus stand — message us your arrival time on WhatsApp and we'll keep your room ready.
